The Most Beautiful Lake in the World
I just had a wonderful adventure visiting San Marcos La Laguna, a small town (~3000 people) in Sololá, Guatemala. The place has breathtaking sights of lake Atitlán and the surrounding volcanoes. It’s a great location if you are looking to escape the stress of life in a big city and spend time connecting with nature.
This place is out of this world, the average yearly weather is 19 degrees Celsius (66.2 Fahrenheit) i.e. neither cold, nor hot. It’s very peaceful and quiet. Food is fresh and delicious. Locals are very friendly. And at night you can do some star watching.
Locals in this town are mostly indigenous and speak Spanish and K’akch’ikel. Walking around we found a place with three Mayan altars. As you can see from the picture, they are still in use today.
San Marcos is full of local and international artists who sell their pieces in one of the main streets. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from and you won’t have trouble finding a vegetarian/vegan restaurant. There are also a lot of places to practice yoga and meditation. Last but not least, there are some Spanish schools.
The lake is surrounded by three volcanoes, Atitlán, Tolimán and San Pedro, which you can see in this picture. They are also known as “The Three Giants” since they all have more than 3000 meters (9800 feet) of elevation. Being there made me feel small but also inspired. Legend says Antoine de Saint-Exupéry was inspired by one of the local hills, Cerro de Oro, to write part of his famous story The Little Prince.
This picture of volcano San Pedro reminded me of my time in Leysin. When you live on a mountain, sometimes you get this really dense fog, which is basically a cloud that is passing by. The way the clouds cover only the top of the volcano looks like if the there was snow at the top.
My wife and I are big fans of the beauty of our home country Guatemala and had a magical time in San Marcos La Laguna and are looking forward to come back. I know I’m biased but I’ve also done some traveling and would claim that this is one of the most beautiful places in the world. If you’d be interested in making a trip to Guatemala, send me an email and I’ll try to help with recommendations.
